Working with Children from Separated Families, From Low to High Conflict
with Lynne Pinterics & Steve Rauh
Overview: This workshop will provide participants with an overview
of the impact of separation and divorce on families, as divorce has been
characterized as the second most stressful life experience, after the
death of a family member. When divorcing adults have children the
stressors become more complex as do the potential long term mental health
impacts on the children. This workshop will provide strategies to help
students assess and intervene with separated families and support children
in ways that can help resolve the unique stressors that often put them at
risk.
Learning Objectives: 1) To understand the psychological dynamics and
theory of separated families at the sub-system level; parent/parent;
parent/child; sibling/sibling; 2) To identify the unique developmental
challenges children experience growing up in separated families, from
childhood through to adulthood, and to identify the variables that
influence the impact of the experiences; 3) To understand the special
challenges to develop and maintain healthy attachments in post separated
families, and ways to help parents understand how to make shifts in their
understanding and behaviours in order to support their children; 4) To
understand children’s coping strategies at different developmental stages,
assess the impact of the separation, and learn play therapy techniques and
therapeutic strategies to support children; 5) To review one model of
group therapeutic mediation with separated families with high conflict.
Tuesday to Friday, October 7, 8, 9 & 10, 2008

Introductory Theraplay with Dr. Evangeline Munns
Overview: Theraplay is a dynamic and effective short-term approach
to treating children’s emotional and behavioural problems. Theraplay is an
approach that focuses on the intimacy and physical interplay that
characterize normal relationships between a parent and child. Theraplay
techniques use structured play to enhance healthy attachment and promote
the child’s self-esteem, competence and trust in others. It is applicable
to children of all ages from infants to adolescents. Methods for guiding
parents to observe their children more empathically and to participate in
treatment sessions aimed at fostering better parent-child relationship
will be reviewed.
Learning Objectives: 1) Understand attachment theory; 2) Identify
the theory and research underlying Theraplay; 3) Understand how Theraplay
can strengthen attachment and resolve behaviour problems; 4) Understand
how Theraplay can be used to treat a wide range of treatment populations;
5) Identify the dimensions of Theraplay; 6) Identify how to apply the
techniques of Theraplay; 7) Identify the basics of group of Theraplay; 8)
