CERTIFICATION

The Canadian Association for Child and Play Therapy (CACPT) serves as the professional association for the field of child psychotherapy and play therapy in Canada. CACPT was established to ensure qualified clinicians in the practice of child psychotherapy and play therapy. The following are the certification categories and general requirements (more detailed information on requirements is available by calling the CACPT at 1-800-361-3951.)

Certification as a Child Psychotherapist and Play Therapist (CPT):

  • Masters or Medical Degree in an appropriate profession from an accredited institution
  • Credit courses in a number of areas related to child psychotherapy (see application for more details)
  • Graduate of the CACPT Play Therapy Certificate Program, or completion of 168 hours of CACPT approved training in child psychotherapy and play therapy
  • 2500 hours of direct clinical practice in the area of child psychotherapy and play therapy
  • 200 hours of direct clinical supervision by a CACPT approved supervisor
  • 6 letters of reference
  • Submission of 3 unedited videotapes of the applicant's therapeutic work
  • Completion of a CACPT Certification Interview
  • Membership in the CACPT and compliance with the CACPT Code of Ethics
  • Once Certified, 36 hours of CACPT approved training must be completed

Certification as a Play Therapy Associate (CPTA):

  • Post-Secondary Degree or Diploma Program in a relevant field from an accredited institution
  • Credit courses in a number of areas related to child psychotherapy (see application for more details)
  • Graduate of the CACPT Play Therapy Certificate Program, or completion of 168 hours of CACPT approved training in child psychotherapy and play therapy
  • 2000 hours of direct clinical practice in the area of child psychotherapy and play therapy
  • 150 hours of direct clinical supervision by a CACPT approved supervisor
  • 6 letters of reference
  • Submission of 3 unedited videotapes of the applicant's therapeutic work
  • Completion of a CACPT Certification Interview
  • Membership in the CACPT and compliance with the CACPT Code of Ethics
  • Once Certified, 24 hours of supervision a year for three years must be obtained, and 16 hours of CACPT approved training must be completed. CPTA's may not be in private practice for the first three years of Certification unless approval had been granted by the CACPT.

Certification as a Child Psychotherapist and Play Therapist Supervisor (CPT-S):

  • CACPT Certification as a Child Psychotherapist and Play Therapist
  • Masters or Medical Degree in an appropriate profession from an accredited institution
  • 2 years of clinical supervisory experience
  • 40 hours of direct consultation on the clinical supervisory process by a CACPT approved Supervisor
  • 200 hours of direct clinical supervisory experience
  • Letters of reference from supervisors and supervisees -Completion of a CACPT Child Psychotherapist and Play Therapist Supervisor Interview
  • Submission of 2 unedited videotapes of supervisory sessions
  • Observation of a mock supervisory session may be conducted with the candidate acting as the supervisor
  • Membership in the CACPT and compliance with the CACPT Code of Ethics

If you are interested in applying for Certification you may request an Application Form from the CACPT. The Application Form will be reviewed in accordance with the "Certification Application Review Process." Upon successful completion of the certification process, a certificate will be provided by the Association and each Certified member will be listed in the formal Certification Registry of the CACPT.
